Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Woman talking to dentist during dental examWhen you lose your teeth, several things start to happen. Simple tasks like eating and speaking become more challenging. Your once beautiful smile is diminished, taking your confidence with it. Your jaw begins to lose bone mass, causing it to begin changing shape and leading to several other significant issues. All of these issues can significantly impact your quality of life. Replacing your missing teeth is essential for giving you your life back. At Gregory A. Williams, DMD, PC, we offer dental implants as an option to replace your missing teeth. Dental implant treatment involves the use of small titanium posts that are surgically implanted into the jawbone. Your bone then fuses to the posts, which become strong, sturdy roots that are used to support your replacement teeth. Along with restoring the functions of your missing teeth and the appearance of your smile, the posts used for dental implants mimic your natural tooth roots and help to preserve the strength of your jawbone. However, how do you know if this revolutionary treatment is right for you?

Are You Missing Teeth?

Whether you have lost a single tooth or you have lost many, dental implants can be an ideal solution for you. They can be used in different situations, making them quite versatile. Missing teeth is the most basic qualification for dental implants. Moreover, if you have all of your teeth currently, but know that you need to have one or more extracted, implants are still an excellent option.

Are You Healthy?

Dental implants require surgery. To undergo surgery, you need to be in good health. Oral health conditions such as gum disease need to be treated first. Chronic health conditions, including diabetes and hypertension, need to be well-managed. If these conditions are not under control, you could be faced with serious complications during your surgery as well as after. Problematic issues could lead to such things as infections and even implant failure. Even if you are healthy, but you feel ill before your scheduled surgery, it may be necessary to put off your appointment until you are feeling better.

Do You Smoke or Use Other Tobacco Products?

Smoking, or using any other types of tobacco products, is bad for your health. These habits can also interfere with the ability of your body to heal. Cigarettes lower your blood oxygen levels and slow your blood flow. This inhibits the delivery of essential nutrients to your mouth, significantly slowing your healing. When this happens, your risk of infection increases.

What is the Condition of Your Jawbone?

For implants to be successful, they need to be properly integrated into the jawbone. For this to happen, you need to have sufficient bone mass remaining. However, bone loss follows shortly after tooth loss, and your jaw gradually begins to lose height, width, and mass. The less bone mass you have, the less bone there is available for osseointegration.

If you have lost too much bone mass, this does not automatically mean that you cannot get implants. A bone graft can be performed to restore missing bone mass in your jaw. Alternatively, if you are missing an entire arch of teeth, you may be eligible for a treatment known as the All-on-4® Treatment Concept.

How Old are You?

You are never too old to enjoy the benefits of dental implants. Whether you are 35, 55, 75 or older, you may be eligible, so long as you meet other requirements. No matter what your age, the benefits are all the same.

While you are never too old for implants, you can be too young. The jawbone continues to develop until your late teens the to early 20s. If an implant is placed in the jaw at a young age, it can affect the development of the jaw, leading to serious issues. If your child or teen has lost a permanent tooth, another type of treatment will need to be considered until their jaw has finished growing. Once the jaw is finished developing, then implants can be discussed.
